05.22.13: Go Back to the 90s With Marty Beckerman's New Book, '90s Island
'90s Island is a new novella from acclaimed humorist Marty Beckerman. The fictional story follows millennial twin brothers Jake and Zack Hind, who are bankrupt from the recession and obsessed with the lost golden era of the 1990s. On their 30th birthday, they drunkenly create a Kickstarter page for '90s ISLAND, a tropical commune dedicated to recreating that beloved, carefree decade. When they wake up, Generation Y has collectively pledged millions of dollars. At first it's a thrilling return to '90s fashions, music, slang, video games and junk food–but the fun turns to horror when Zack seizes power and banseverything that does not come from the twentieth century, including books and medicine. Jake knows that he must stop Zack, but not before conquering his own nostalgia.
"Everywhere I look, I see the '90s coming back, from grunge fashions to New Kids on the Block's boy band tour," said Beckerman. "People remember the '90s as a happier time. We had a prosperous economy, movies weren't as dark and gritty, the music was more upbeat–I'll admit it, I still listen to ska–and guys weren't afraid to bleach our hair, even if we looked ridiculous. Now's the perfect time for a literary treatment of this '90s revival."

05.22.13: Jurassic Park to Receive New Sequel
Jurassic Park (1993) was hugely successful in the 90s and even spawned two sequels: The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) and Jurassic Park III (2001). I mean c'mon. Who doesn't love dinosaurs?!? Throw in Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, some crazy cloned Velociraptors and a T-rex, and wrap it up in a bow by having Steven Spielberg direct it and you've got blockbuster gold.
With revived interest in the 90s, it seems like perfect timing for a fourth sequel and apparently Spielberg agrees. Unfortunately not much is known about the new film's plot or cast at the moment, however, the script has been touted as the best since Michael Crichton's original novel. Jurassic Park IV was originally slated to hit theaters June 13, 2014, but now it had been put on hold indefinitely. With numerous rumors swirling around, let's just hope the sequel doesn't go extinct. Don't know about you, but I'm ready for another Jurassic Park adventure.

04.14.11: Two Classic 90s TV Series Come to DVD This April
First up we've got the freshest of fresh comedies (so "fresh" in fact it says so in the title), The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Bel-Air has never been the same since Will "The Fresh Prince" Smith rolled up on the Bank's doorstep and "life got flipped, turned upside down." Join Will, Carlton, Ashley, Hillary, Uncle Phil, Aunt Vivian, Geoffrey and special guests like William Shatner, B.B. King, Dick Clark, Richard Roundtree, Wayne Newton and Chris Rock as they wrap-up the 6th and final season. Nab your copy of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: Season 6 when it hits shelves April 19th, 2011. Trust me. You won't want to miss the blooper episode.
Next we travel from Bel-Air, Los Angeles, CA to Huntington, Long Island, NY and meet up with Seavers as they enter season 2. After 15 years as a stay-at-home mom, Maggie has decided to re-enter the work place and takes a job as a TV reporter. Will her husband, Dr. Jason Seavers, be able to run his psychiatry practice from home AND keep an eye on their three kids at the same time? With the likes of Mike (the troublemaker), Carol (the honors student), and Ben (the rambunctious baby of the family) it will take both Jason and Maggie to keep this brood under control. Pick up your copy of Growing Pains: Season 2 on April 26th, 2011 and find out what schemes Mike and the rest of the kids cook up.
01.31.11: Q: Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? A: Facebook. (Duh!)
Remember playing Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? as a kid? I do. In fact, I had the Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? game for Nintendo which even came with a 1,374 page copy of The New American Desk Encyclopedia to aid in your criminal hunting. After acquiring the game for Christmas (or was it my birthday?), I proceeded to MAKE my Dad play with me every chance I could. (Thanks Dad!) I felt so cool being an agent for Acme Detective Agency and tracking Carmen Sandiego and her V.I.L.E. henchmen throughout history. It was like James Bond meets Time Cop for kids. Just call me 00K8.
And how about watching the WITWICS kid's TV game show on PBS? I spent many afternoons fighting crime with the gumshoe contestants, although my geography skills were always lacking. (I could never remember the location of all the countries in Africa like this kid.) My favorite part of the show was the vocal harmonies and comedic antics of Rockapella. They were da bomb!
After a decade in hiding, Blue Fang is bringing back the elusive trench coat and fedora wearing thief with an updated look for Facebook (check out the trailer below). This newest version of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? will drop Wednesday February 9th. I know I can't wait to flex my detective skills once again. Can you?
Acme, this agent is ready to be reinstated!
*me singing* ...
"Well she sneaks around the world from Kiev to Carolina. She's a sticky fingered filcher from Berlin down to Belize. She'll take you for a ride on a slow boat to China. Tell me Where in the World is Caremen Sandiego?"
11.04.10: OMG!!! NKOTB & BSB To Tour Together!
Get ready to squeal and pee your pants! Yesterday (Nov. 3, 2010) Ryan Seacrest confirmed the rumors on his radio show ... boy band heartthrobs from the 80s & 90s are indeed joining forces. Summer 2011 will see the likes of New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys touring together. Yes, you heard me right, I said "together. " Let me break it down for you formula style: (NKOTB + BSB) + (1 night + 1 stage) = Once in a Lifetime Event!
While all the tour details and dates have yet to be nailed down, the boy band concert extravaganza will span the U.S. Tune in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest Monday, November 8th for an exclusive interview with the NKOTB & BSB gang. They'll be discussing the preparations for the upcoming tour, as well as giving listeners their first chance at winning tickets.
Also be sure to tune in to the American Music Awards Sunday, November 21st on ABC for your first chance to see Donnie, Joey, Jordan, Jonathan, Danny, Brian, AJ, Howie and Nick perform together live. (Too bad Kevin hasn't rejoined BSB. *Sigh*)
So fans, are you excited? We sure are!
09.09.10: LFO member, Rich Cronin, passes away at 35
In 2005 Rich Cronin, front man for the boy band LFO (or the Lyte Funky Ones), was diagnosed with leukemia. In an interview with The Boston Globe in 2005, Rich discussed when he learned he was first sick: "I just know that four hours before I got that phone call [from the doctor] I was just some dude with mono, then all of a sudden I was a cancer patient." After going into remission in 2006, the cancer flared up again this summer and he was admitted to the hospital for treatment. Yesterday afternoon (September 8th), Rich suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 35.
LFO got their start in 1995, but rose to fame in 1999 with their song "Summer Girls." Prior to their success, their label (BMG Records) had the trio touring in Europe and playing music that wasn't exactly their style, in hopes to build a fan base. After getting fed up with the label telling LFO how to dress, act and what to sing, Rich was just about to call it quits on the band when "Summer Girls" exploded on the radio. While reminiscing with The Boston Globe about their hit song, Rich said, "I just thought back to when I was young, happy, no worries. 'Summer Girls' was all about a summer on the Cape. Inside jokes. I never thought that anyone besides my close friends would ever hear it." Well luckily for LFO and the rest of the world, we did. Teenage girls everywhere (and anyone within earshot of a radio) knew the lyrics to the catchy tune. "Summer Girls" spent a whopping 17 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 3. And in 2010 Billboard magazine named it the 16th biggest summer song of all-time.
Glee's Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), the sharp-tongued cheerleader coach you love to hate, stars in her very own shot-for-shot version of the material girl's 1990 hit "Vogue." This music video is part of next week's all material girl episode entitled "The Power of Madonna." Other Madonna classics to be featured include "Like a Virgin," "Express Yourself," and "Like a Prayer." The Madge inspired episode airs Tuesday at 9/8c on FOX. Be sure to set your TiVos! You won't want to miss it.
03.22.10: 90s Celebrities take on Dancing with the Stars
Dancing with the Stars kicks off its 10th season tonight with two celebrity dancers straight out of the 90s. I'm of course talking of none other than Hollywood's bad girl, Shannen Doherty, and Baywatch babe, Pamela Anderson.
If you were even remotely in tune with the 90s you've heard of both these stars. Shannen Doherty played troubled teen Brenda Walsh on the hit show Beverly Hills, 90210 and as one of the "charmed ones," Prue Halliwell, on the WB's witch show Charmed. Doherty is also known for her roles in the the 1988 film Heathers and the 1995 movie Mallrats. The mere mention of Pamela Anderson and everyone's brains instantly pull up a picture of her running down a beach in slow motion, sporting an orange-red one-piece and carrying a life preserver, thanks to her role as C.J. Parker on Baywatch. And if you were a fan of Home Improvement, you'll remember her as Lisa, the original "Tool Time Girl." Thanks to her role on Baywatch (and being a Playboy Playmate), Pamela has become an international sex symbol and is even noted in the Guinness Book of World Records as the "most downloaded" star.
For the competition, Shannen will be dancing with 2-time professional champion, Marc Ballas, who brought home the mirror ball trophy with figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi (season 6) and gymnist Shawn Johnson (season 8). Pamela is paired with newcomer Damian Whitewood, a Latin and Ballroom specialist from Australia.
Do Shannen and Pamela have what it takes to shake their groove thang and snag the coveted mirror ball? Or will they have two left feet? Tune in tonight (and every Monday) at 8/7c to see how the 90s stars fair. And don't forget to vote to show these two some 90s love!
Backstreet Boys, the boy band that made all us girls swoon and scream like crazed maniacs in the late 90s with the likes of "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)" and "I Want It That Way," are hitting the high seas. The 'Backstreet Boys Cruise 2010' is set for December 9th-13th, departing from South Florida with stops at exotic ports along the way. That's right ladies, just you and BSB's Nick, Brian, AJ, & Howie trapped on a ship for 4 days. Many would call this heaven.
According to backstreetboys.com, some of the fun things on tap are: an intimate performance by the Backstreet Boys, Q&A, Photo Session, Deck Party and Beach Party. All events are hosted by the Boys and lots of other fun stuff TBA!!
Tickets go on sale for BSB Fan Club members March 15th (click here to join) and the general public on the 22nd so put a big red circle on your calendar. You won't want to miss out. No word yet on prices. For more information, visit Backstreet Boy's official site.
02.03.10: "Whoa!"...The 90s are back on ABC Family
ABC Family recently announced a new comedy called Melissa & Joey. It will star none other than 90s TV favs Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Clarissa Explains It All) and Joey Lawrence (Blossom). The new series is set to premiere later this year.
According to ABC Family:
The new show finds Hart portraying Mel, the grown-up former wild child of a political family who is now a local politician herself. When her sister ends up in prison and brother-in-law flees after a scandal hits, Mel must take responsibility for her teenaged niece Lennox and pre-adolescent nephew Ryder. Spread too thin to manage by herself, help comes in the unlikely form of Joe (Lawrence) who, desperate for a job, moves in and becomes the family's "manny."
Hmm ... Kinda has a Who's the Boss feel, doesn't it?
Hart & Lawrence previously stared together in the ABC Family's original movie, My Fake Fiancé, in which they were said to have "awesome chemistry." Will they be able to duplicate it? Will they bring back the 90s flavor we miss so much? Guess we'll just have to watch and see.
12.21.09: Actress Brittany Murphy (1977-2009) Passes Away at 32
Yet another 90s star has left us too soon. The bubbly Brittany Murphy was pronounced dead Sunday in Los Angeles. She was only 32. While the autopsy results have not be released, it is said she passed from natural causes. One contributing factor could have been the flu-like symptoms she experienced prior to her death.
Brittany first stole our our hearts as Tai in Clueless (1995). We loved watching Cher and Dionne take Tai under their wings and transform her from a grunge attired transfer student to one of the well-dressed popular kids.
After Clueless, Brittany's movie career took off. She went on to star in Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), Girl, Interrupted (1999) with Angelina Jolie & Winona Ryder, Riding In Cars With Boys (2001) with Drew Barrymore, 8 Mile (2002) with Eminem & Kim Basinger, Just Married (2003) with Ashton Kutcher, Uptown Girls (2003) with Dakota Fanning, Little Black Book (2004), Sin City (2005), and as Gloria the penguin in Happy Feet (2006).
We at 90s 411 will deeply miss Brittany Murphy and her infectious smile. Watch the video below for more on the star's passing.
10.28.09: Lilith Fair is Back!
The largely popular and estrogen driven music festival is being revived for 2010. Lilith Fair, the brain child of Sarah McLachlan, Dan Fraser, Marty Diamond and Terry McBride, first hit the concert scene in 1997. It became one of the highest grossing tours in the world. In its three-year run, the festival played to more than 1.5 million fans and raised millions for charities.
With a new website and renewed excitement about the festival, Lilith Fair has announced the first round of tour dates for the Summer of 2010. At the moment, only US and Canadian cities plus London, UK are on the list, but expect more dates in more countries (as well as the line up) to be announced soon.
Visit the Lilith Fair site for more information. Be sure to join their mailing list during your visit. You'll receive an exclusive free MP3 download of "Angel" performed by Sarah McLachlan and featuring Emmylou Harris from Lilith 1998 when you sign up.
And to get you pumped up for next summer, here's Sarah McLachlan performing "Building A Mystery."
09.15.09: Patrick Swayze Looses His Battle With Cancer
Yet another sad day as the world morns the passing of an 80s & 90s movie icon. After 20 hard fought months, Patrick Swayze lost his battle against Pancreatic cancer yesterday. He was only 57. He danced his way into our hearts as Johnny Castle in Dirty Dancing (1987), teaching us that 'Nobody puts Baby in a corner.' He showed us how to be a 'cooler' and bounce unruly bar patrons in Road House (1989). In Ghost (1990), he proved that true love lasts forever (even after death) and that good always triumphs over evil. In Point Break (1991), he taught us that 'If you want the ultimate, you've got to be willing to pay the ultimate price. It's not tragic to die doing what you love.' He even showed us he wasn't afraid of his feminine side when he took on the role of drag queen, Vida Bohem, in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995). And who could forget his classic SNL Chippendales dancer skit with Chris Farley. What moves!
So to all the tributes, proclamations of love, and R.I.P. wishes for Patrick Swayze, we at 90s 411 say, "Ditto."
08.30.09: Oasis, 90s Britpop Pioneers, Split
Yesterday Noel Gallagher, lead guitarist and songwriter of the Britpop sensation Oasis, announced he was leaving the band. He and his brother Liam, lead singer of the group, have always had a tumultuous relationship. This tension between the two is what has mostly led to the break up. Earlier this month it was revealed that Noel and Liam were no longer on speaking terms and that they traveled separately while on tour, only seeing each other while on stage.
Noel posted the following announcement to his fans on the band's website:
Dearly beloved, it is with a heavy heart and a sad face that I say this
to you this morning.
I think this is a sad day for music fans All Around the World. Oasis has always been one of my fav bands since first hearing Wonderwall. Lets just hope that in the future Noel and Liam can set aside their differences and reunite. In the meantime, maybe Noel will go solo. I'd Definitely, Maybe love to hear more music from him.

08.17.09: Sabrina the Teenage Witch to compete on Dancing With The Stars
It was announced today that Melissa Joan Hart, star of 90s TV series Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Clarissa Explains It All, will be joining season 9 of Dancing With The Stars. Will she be able to work some magic on the dance floor? We'll all just have to tune in to find out. Season 9 kicks off Monday September 21st at 8/7c on ABC.
Other 90s alumni trying out their dancing shoes include R&B artists, Mıa, whose self-titled 1998 debut album sold over a million copies in the US and produced the top ten single "It's All About Me," and Macy Gray, whose song "I Try" was one of the biggest singles of 1999. Also from the world of music is Aaron Carter, late-90s pop/hip-hop artist and younger brother of Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter. And rounding out the DWTS's 90s personas are 90s Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl champ Michael Irvin, 90s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover model Kathy Ireland, and 90s actress Debi Mazar (Goodfellas, The Doors, Malcolm X, Batman Forever, & Bullets Over Broadway).
