Spice Girls Costume

Spice Girls costumeSo tell me what you want, what you really really want. You wannabe a Spice Girl you say? Then look no further because we've got the look for you.

The Spice Girls 'spiced up' the pop music scene in the later part of the 90s with their catchy tunes and distinctive personalities. They became an international sensation and were dubbed "the most widely recognized group of individuals since John, Paul, George and Ringo" by biographer David Sinclair. Even if you didn't like their music (or weren't tuned into the current music scene), you could still list their nicknames ... Baby Spice, Ginger Spice, Scary Spice, Sporty Spice and Posh Spice. Their notoriety for both music and personas make the Spice Girls the perfect choice for a group costume idea. Follow these few simple guidelines and you'll be on your way to insta girl group in no time.

Baby Spice (Emma Bunton) – Think cute and innocent. Baby Spice has straight blond hair, usually worn in pigtails. For her outfit stick to light colored baby doll dresses with color coordinated platform boots or thick-soled tennis shoes.

Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell) – The sassy and vivacious unofficial group leader. Aptly named for her bright red locks, Ginger Spice's wardrobe often edged toward the outrageous. Think sequined leotard with black hose and thick heels or go patriotic with a Union Jack dress and bright red platform boots.

Scary Spice (Melanie Brown) – The loud and cheeky type. Go for animal prints or loud prints. Scary Spice liked to wear pants with a tank/bra top or short shorts with a long open jacket. Don't forget the matching cheetah print platforms! For her coif, it's wild crazy curls all the way. And as a bonus you could section off the front half of your hair into horns wrapped in gold string.

Sporty Spice (Melanie Chisholm) – The athlete of the bunch. Sporty Spice kept her hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail. After all, you don't want your hair falling in your face when you're exercising. For gear, go with sports clothing ... swooshy adidas pants with halter sports bra/tank top and some sneakers.

Posh Spice (Victoria Beckham) – Think refined and polished. Posh Spice was always sleek and sexy from her choppy brunette bob to her form fitting designer clothes. The ‘little black dress' is her signature item with strappy high heels ... the higher the better.

Spice Girls costume idea - Zig-a-zig-ahhh

Don't have 5 people to complete your group? No worries. You can pretend it's 1998 and Ginger Spice has run off to start her solo career. After all, 4 Spice Girls is just as good as 5 Spice Girls.

Spice Girls' WannabeTo finish off the costume and essence that is the Spice Girls, don't forget to practice your British accents and UK slang. As a bonus item, bring along some microphones. You can also learn the choreography from Wannabe's stair case scene (pictured at right) so you can show off your collective moves when the song is played. And above all else exude girl power!
