Jedi Costume
|
Love it or hate it, George Lucas' decision to release a series of
prequels to the enormously popular Star Wars films spawned a tidal wave of
sci-fi fans desperate to prolong the magic of their favorite cinematic
adventure. The Phantom Menace introduced the world to a new cast of Jedi
characters, those renowned and powerful beings with the ability to
manipulate the Force and wield light sabers with dazzling skill.
Jedi costumes are fun and simple in terms of their general appearance. Essentially, most Jedi clothed

themselves in robes or capes that reflected
browns, tans and other soft earth tones. A bathrobe will usually do the
trick if you are pressed for time, but it's far better to get a robe with a
bit more of a heft to the fabric, and also a hood. Underneath the robe,
options range from a simple dark-colored caftan to a vaguely nautical tunic
tied around the middle with a sash. This tunic is usually almost always
white, although off-white or gray is also acceptable.

The single most important Jedi accessory is the light saber. You can buy
one at almost any toy store on the planet, or you can make your own out of
plastic or cardboard tubing. It should be around 3 to 4 feet in length, with
a painted black handle and a green or blue blade. Unless you spring for a
fancy model, it's up to you to make the cool buzzing sound as it slices
through the air.
